A KPP Initiative to promote responsible Citizenship

For a second consecutive year, the KPP Initiative on Citizenship is making an impact at the EFA School in Port-à-Piment. Under the dedicated leadership of Principal Mac Simon Louis, students in 5th and 6th-grades are  participating in a program designed to instill values of responsibility, discipline, and teamwork.

In the KPP Initiative Program, students are immersed in various aspects of Citizenship, with a strong emphasis on practical application. The students engage in Agriculture, while working in groups and sharing responsibilities. They also learn about their environment, the importance of sustainable practices and the value of hard work.

One goal of the program is to foster a sense of collective responsibility for the immediate surroundings. The students are actively involved in keeping the schoolyard clean and free of debris, ensuring their classrooms are neat, and meticulously aligning their desks – all tasks undertaken with a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. These seemingly small actions build a foundation for greater civic engagement and a sense of ownership over their shared spaces.

The curriculum is designed to empower students to create projects that benefit them individually, as a group, and their wider community. This focus on tangible outcomes encourages problem-solving skills and reinforces the idea that their actions can have a positive impact.

As the school year draws to a close next month, the students are preparing for a significant milestone: a comprehensive presentation to their teachers and parents. This event will serve as a showcase of the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout the year, demonstrating their growth in areas like environmental awareness, agricultural practices, and the core tenets of responsible citizenship.

KPP extends its heartfelt gratitude to the directors of EFA School for their unwavering commitment to the program. The success of the KPP Initiative at EFA School is a testament to the power of investing in young people, fostering a generation of responsible, disciplined, and community-minded citizens who are poised to make a positive difference in Port-à-Piment and beyond.

On another front:

Konbit Pou Potapiman has selected as one of its long-term goals the revival of Agriculture in the farmland of the commune. The countryside is now in a state of total devastation. Crops and livestock have been lost to the one-two punch of the August 14th Earthquake as well as Tropical Storm Grace which followed 2 days later. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, and its revival will ensure increasing wealth, improved health, nutrition and housing for the affected population.

On Sunday August 29th, 2021, Mr. Jean Robert Isidor (KPP representative in Haiti) held an initial meeting in the village of  Dolian with about 80 local farmers.  They all lost their crops and need help to resume farming. At the meeting, the farmers expressed their needs and concerns. Mr. Isidor profiled the KPP program, which would offer the appropriate seeds to the farmers, which they would cultivate under the professional guidance of the local agronomist. Mr. Isidor is setting up a formal registration of the participants, distribution of the seeds and monitoring of the project.

On the move to restore the flora of Port-a-Piment

In 2016, following the passage of Hurricane Matthew, Port-a-Piment found its fauna and flora devastated. Most of the trees had fallen and still today, few coconut trees remain in the town or the nearby villages.

With the aim of helping to restore the natural environment of its beloved commune, Konbit Pou Potapiman partnered with Initiative 5×4, an environmental organization created to foster a citizen response to the damage caused by Hurricane Matthew. One of its objectives is to boost a national momentum for the country’s reforestation by planting 4 million trees such as palm trees, coconut trees, mango trees…. over 5 years.

On May 31st 2021, local members of KPP-Haiti distributed  84 young coconut  trees  to 40 families of the commune, and to 2 schools in Port a Piment. (Ecole Nationale de Figuiers and Ecole Nationale de Potus). The recipients had been carefully chosen to ensure their ability to plant and care for the trees, and guarantee their survival.
