New Program to Teach Students about Citizenship

by Claude Levy

As far back as we adults can remember, we had a citizenship class in school, and we studied that from a book entitled: “Instruction Civique et Morale”. One of the schools in Port-a-Piment that KPP is helping has started to implement a program that had vanished from the school curriculum for a number of years.

Konbit Pou Potapiman embraces the idea to reinstate that course in a practical way. Last February, the Director of the EFACAP school, Mr. Mac-Louis Simon, started the program for the 4th and 5th grades of “Année Fondamentale”.It will be held for a duration of 2 years, with the expectation that these students:

  1. a) Will become responsible citizens
  2. b) Will take care of the environment.
  3. c) Will learn to solve conflicts peacefully
  4. d) Will be respectful towards people in general
  5. e) Will work together towards progress for the community and beyond.

The main topics outlined in this course are:

1- Know yourself

2- Discipline

3- Responsibility

4- Community assets

5- Transforming dreams into reality

6- Team work

Each topic will culminate into a group project that will clearly illustrate what the students have learned from the sessions.

Mr. Simon held a meeting with the Parents. They were encouraged to support the students in their preparation to become responsible citizens so they can be trusted leaders in the future.

The goal of KPP is to accompany Port-a-Piment and its surrounding towns in their efforts to improve the lives of their population, to educate their children and young adults, and finally to maintain their public places so that all the families can enjoy a good life and their children can continue their work later on.

The many ways KPP prevailed in 2023.

A new year is starting soon, and KPP looks fondly over a year gone, a time that was full of challenges and that tested our resolve to help improve lives in the commune of Port-a-Piment.

In the area of Education:

  • KPP expanded its Sponsorship Program to also help 10 young men and women acquire vocational skills. 30 promising youngsters continue on the program for their primary education.
  • The 2023 KPP Summer Camp for 80 children was planned and executed by the local KPP members.
  • Additional books were acquired for the KPP Children Library. It is now open to the students of the EFACAP during school days and to children of the town on weekends.
  • The KPP Prix d’Excellence and a University Scholarship were awarded to deserving students.

KPP gave financial support to local projects that enrich the lives of the youth of the commune such as:

  • The Inter-school Soccer Championship
  • The Reading Contest at the EFACAP school
  • The opening of the Jean Marc N’Deurbelaou Room at the school of Notre -Dame du Rosaire, for audio visual education.

In 2023, KPP also continued with:

  • Its Dairy Cow Project
  • The Animal Breeding Project
  • The channeling of donated medical supplies to nearby communities.

The Board of Konbit Pou Potapiman thanks you so much for your support.

We wish for a Better Year for our homeland; a Healthy Peaceful Year for you and your families!

Award of the Gattereau Scholarship

Konbit Pou Potapiman Inc. is proud to announce that the “Ing Gerard Paul Moryl Gattereau Scholarship” has been awarded to the student Jaquelin Musac of the Lycée de Port-a-Piment. Musac is a resident of Potus in the commune of Port-a-Piment  The funds were provided by the Gattereau family and friends in memory of the late Ing Gerard Paul Moryl Gattereau. Mr. Musac is now attending the College of Engineering at the American University of the Caribbean in les Cayes, Haiti.

To qualify for the scholarship applicants had to be recommended by their school administrators, maintain an above average during the academic year (NS4), pass both the Official State   and the University   entrance exams. Four students from different schools of Port-a-Piment underwent the eligibility process. The winner was chosen based on the University admission exam score.

Update: the KPP Dairy Cow Project

The KPP Dairy Cow Project that was initiated in April 2022 in the village of Chariole, is a long term project where selected beneficiaries tend to the animals, with the goal of securing milk for their family and the community, and also to become owners of the first offspring. We can say that the program is moving in the right direction.

The beneficiaries had to face and overcome many challenges.

A drought in the South of Haiti affected the production of milk. The cows produced sufficient milk to feed the calves but not enough to be shared with the community. The loss of one cow was also attributed to the severe drought in the area.

A wave of Insecurity in the area resulted in bulls being the target of thieves. To prevent a loss, our members on the ground decided to replace the bull with a cow.

Nevertheless, we are pleased to report that four (4) baby calves were born in the last few months, bringing our inventory to 12 cows.

After a recent visit in the area, Agronomist Gayony Germeil reported positively on the project. The veterinary visit is expected to occur early next month to ensure that all animals are faring well and getting the necessary vaccines.

Thank you for your support. You are the reason we are able to help the community of Port-a-Piment. Please continue donating. Every donation makes a difference.
