A KPP Initiative to promote responsible Citizenship

For a second consecutive year, the KPP Initiative on Citizenship is making an impact at the EFA School in Port-à-Piment. Under the dedicated leadership of Principal Mac Simon Louis, students in 5th and 6th-grades are  participating in a program designed to instill values of responsibility, discipline, and teamwork.

In the KPP Initiative Program, students are immersed in various aspects of Citizenship, with a strong emphasis on practical application. The students engage in Agriculture, while working in groups and sharing responsibilities. They also learn about their environment, the importance of sustainable practices and the value of hard work.

One goal of the program is to foster a sense of collective responsibility for the immediate surroundings. The students are actively involved in keeping the schoolyard clean and free of debris, ensuring their classrooms are neat, and meticulously aligning their desks – all tasks undertaken with a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. These seemingly small actions build a foundation for greater civic engagement and a sense of ownership over their shared spaces.

The curriculum is designed to empower students to create projects that benefit them individually, as a group, and their wider community. This focus on tangible outcomes encourages problem-solving skills and reinforces the idea that their actions can have a positive impact.

As the school year draws to a close next month, the students are preparing for a significant milestone: a comprehensive presentation to their teachers and parents. This event will serve as a showcase of the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout the year, demonstrating their growth in areas like environmental awareness, agricultural practices, and the core tenets of responsible citizenship.

KPP extends its heartfelt gratitude to the directors of EFA School for their unwavering commitment to the program. The success of the KPP Initiative at EFA School is a testament to the power of investing in young people, fostering a generation of responsible, disciplined, and community-minded citizens who are poised to make a positive difference in Port-à-Piment and beyond.

2024- The Year in Review

2024 presented significant challenges for our brothers and sisters in Haiti. National life came to a standstill in many regions, particularly in the Artibonite and West departments. Insecurity impacted the entire nation and halted numerous activities. Schools, hospitals, and homes were destroyed, and many people became refugees in their own country.

Yet, despite the recurring violence and interruptions of routine activities, people in parts of the country managed to maintain their way of life. Port-a-Piment stands out as a beacon of hope for a better future.

We are proud that KPP continued working with the populations we serve, and our programs are progressing at a highly satisfactory level. In 2024, Konbit Pou Potapiman made significant strides thanks to the invaluable support of our donors.

Educational Sponsorship:

  • KPP provided assistance to 30 families by covering their child’s tuition, fees, as well as  necessary school supplies.
  • KPP funded the training of 10 young adults in trades such as masonry, flooring, and carpentry, enhancing their employment opportunities.
  • KPP provided support to the community school of the village of Jabouin and its 53 students.

  • KPP organized a summer remedial program for 100 students to help them advance in their studies and be promoted to the next level.

  • In the school of Figuiers, KPP funded the repairs to a structure deemed unusable since the earthquake of 2021. Now, 40 children have a proper learning environment.

Animal Breeding Program:

  • During the last year, the KPP herd grew from 8 to 13 cows.
  • The Goat Program now benefits 28 families with valuable breeding stock.

Citizenship Program:  KPP partnered with the administration of the EFACAP of Port-a-Piment to engage students in activities that promote civic responsibility and community involvement.

KPP Children Library:

  • The library remained open to students during school days and on weekends.
  • KPP provided support to local groups for soccer tournaments and other cultural activities.

The Board of Directors and the members of Konbit Pou Potapiman take this opportunity to wish you a peaceful holiday season and a very Happy New Year.

Port-a-Piment in Action: Celebration of Vertières

The commemoration of the battle of Vertières on November 18th, 1803, in Port-a-Piment was a vibrant and patriotic celebration to honor Haiti’s historic victory for independence.

This year’s event was marked by a lively parade featuring students from various schools across the commune who marched through the streets singing patriotic songs that resonated with pride and unity. The Saurel Descombes’ fanfare added a festive rhythm to the occasion amplifying the energy and enthusiasm of the participants,

This meaningful celebration was organized and guided by the directors Josue Paul and Mac Louis Simon of EFACAP (Ecole Fondamentale d’Application et Centre d’Appui Pédagogique) with invaluable support from the EFACAP Management Council. Their collaborative efforts ensured the success of the event which inspired the younger generation to embrace their heritage and keep the values of resilience and freedom that define the Haitian spirit.

Reopening of schools in the commune of Port-a-Piment

We are witnessing a slow return to normalcy in the wake of the political turmoil that gripped Haiti in the last few weeks, and which prompted all schools to close their doors. School reopening in Port-a-Piment has been a gradual process. At the schools of EFACAP and Notre Dame du Rosaire classes resumed on Monday February 19th, but not at full capacity.

The disruption caused by the nationwide political unrest prompted the parents to send their children back to the classrooms with some anxiety. But being mindful of their children’s education, residents of the commune of Port-a-Piment are now expressing a collective sigh of relief as schools reopen.

Despite the many challenges, the reopening of schools signifies a step towards normalcy and the restoration of routine for both students and parents. It becomes a beacon of hope amid the broader problems faced by the society at large. As classrooms gradually fill with students, parents are finding solace in the fact that their children can resume their education, even if the path forward is uncertain.
