Vocational Skills Development

In our eternal search for opportunities to improve our commune of Port-a-Piment, Konbit Pou Potapiman members in the US and on the ground in Haiti identified another need : Vocational Skills Development. Once the project was identified, it was quickly proposed and discussed at our board meeting; it was approved and initiated immediately.

Why take on this challenge now? It’s well known that low skills in a commune perpetuates poverty and inequality.  The commune of Port-a-Piment faced with extraordinary economic challenges suffers from unemployment, underemployment, and extremely limited economic opportunities. Technical skills development can help reverse those challenges and simultaneously increase productivity and improve the standards of living in the area. Helping a work force develop and update their skills makes economic sense.

Due to the lack of opportunities, a number of young adults are unemployed. In addition, those who had the opportunity to complete their basic schooling are unable to advance further. Because of financial difficulties, they are unable to acquire the technical skills needed to give them a fighting chance to get a job or start a new business.

To help those who fall into this category, KPP took the initiative of looking for candidates who:

  • are interested in acquiring technical skills from the local Vocational School (COCSH- Centre de Développement Sur la Côte Sud d’Haiti)}
  • have the aptitude.
  • and are unable to afford the tuition.

Ten (10) young men were selected by the members of KPP Haiti.  Six (6) chose to train as tile layers and the other four (4) as masons. The training is for a period of one(1) to three (3) years.

Upon graduation, these individuals should have the basic tools needed to practice their skills.

Thank you for your support. You are the reason we are able to help the community of Port-a-Piment.

Please continue donating. Every donation makes a difference.

An exciting day at the School of Notre-Dame du Rosaire

On Wednesday March 29th, 2023, the pupils of the School of Notre-Dame du Rosaire in Port-a-Piment were excited to participate in the first showing of an educational film, in a classroom named to honor the memory of a friend of KPP: Jean-Marc N’Deurbelaou.

Konbit Pou Potapiman had been chosen by a dear friend of Jean Marc to fulfill the promise of helping to educate through enjoyment.

With the accord of the KPP Haiti members and the Principal of the NDR school, KPP donated the audio visual equipment, as well as a wall plaque for the Salle Jean-Marc N’Deurbelaou. With the funds provided by Jean-Marc’s friend , a 55”Television set, a DVD player and sets of educational films were purchased and shipped  to the school.

The students were all excited and surprised: In their classroom sits a large TV set and a plaque of honor.

The ceremony included a word of thanks from a student of the class of 6ème Année Fondamentale.

Mrs. Paule-Edeline Orcel, KPP-Haiti Secretary, reminded the students of the importance of a good education and that the documentaries that would be shown were specifically chosen to enhance their knowledge of the World and their Environment.

Sr. Jacqueline, Director of the NDR school, took the opportunity to thank KPP, the donor and the parents of Jean Marc N’Deurbelaou on behalf of the students and their parents. She hopes that her students will greatly benefit from this precious gift.

Refreshments were then served to the delight of the students and their teachers.
